The Derbyshire Health Promoting Workforce Project
The Health Promoting Workforce Project is a collaboration between the Public Health Directorate of NHS Derbyshire County and Derbyshire Community Health Services. (DCHS)
The overall aim of the Project in Derbyshire is to improve health and wellbeing, promote quality of life and support the reduction of inequalities across Derbyshire. It uses a partnership approach and whole systems change management approach to engage and train staff. The project and training has evolved from discussion workshops held with groups of staff and engagement with service users.
The content of the training takes participants through a journey that addresses: The meaning of health and wellbeing to individuals; Employee health & wellbeing; Definitions of heath & wellbeing; Determinants of health; Health inequalities; Health promotion and promoting health & wellbeing; Barriers to promoting health & wellbeing; Understanding behaviour change; Core communication skills; Where to access information; Referrals to health promotion specialists. This includes a three hour long session with PowerPoint presentation, group exercises, discussion and individual reflection. Staff are encouraged to undertake steps 1-3 of the NHS Derbyshire County e-learning for Understanding Health Improvement. The resource has been locally developed based on the RSPH Level 2 understanding Health Improvement and is available at: www.uhi-online.co.uk
The Project has been evaluated from the start and evaluation will continue with a longitudinal, qualitative study looking at staff attitudes, motivation and confidence.
