Includes specific and generalizable learning about change and the conditions for success:

  • What makes some organisations successful and others not in terms of take up?

  • Why do some organisations spread quickly and others do not?

  • What are the timescales that organisations take to spread?

  • Are there organisations that spread quickly and sustain well? What are the characteristics of these organisations?

  • What is the process that is used in organisations that have spread and sustained well?

  • For organisations that struggle, do they share specific factors?

  • Is it possible to identify specific actions that could overcome barriers?

 

Lessons from the Productive Ward

At a critical time when the NHS is facing its biggest challenge in history – to find £15-20bn in efficiency savings, large scale improvement programmes such as The Productive Ward can help organisations make significant improvements in their productivity and efficiency, however spread needs to be facilitated at scale for these improvements to be realised.

A new study has been released, Improving healthcare quality at scale and pace - Lessons from The Productive Ward: Releasing time to care™ programme, which provides insights into how organisations can spread learning, embed and sustain improvement programmes. 

The results of this study are of significant interest not just to those implementing The Productive Ward but any large scale change programme.     


Commissioned by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement and led by the National Nursing Research Unit at King’s College, the study is based on in-depth case study interviews and insights from literature reviews.  It looks at characteristics that have enhanced the spread of The Productive Ward such as strong senior executive and clinical support, as well as factors that have challenged spread, including the availability of resources and existing work pressures.

A copy of the Executive Summary and Final Report and are available to download, along with Top Tips for spreading The Productive Ward within NHS Trusts.  The top tips document will be of interest to other Productive programme leads or any large scale change programme.
