Innovation projects which could boost NHS productivity savings to £13m showcased
Ground-breaking innovation projects which could significantly increase the quality of outcomes for patients and generate savings for the NHS £13m were announced at an SHA cluster-wide event last month.
The eight projects have received £750,000 funding from the 2011/12 East Midlands Regional Innovation Fund and it is estimated that by improving the way patient care is delivered and thereby reducing the NHS’ operating costs, they could achieve at least £2m in productivity savings – which when added to the savings potential of previously funded projects, could make a total of £13m which can be ploughed back into NHS services.
They were showcased at the first NHS Midlands and East Innovation Expo on 23rd November at Loughborough University which was attended by more than 330 delegates from healthcare, universities, social care, industry, the independent and the voluntary sectors.
The event also included presentations and displays from NHS innovations across the West Midlands, East of England and East Midlands. There were also insights on the day from the new Midlands and East SHA Cluster leaders including Kaye Burnett, Vice Chair for NHS Midlands and East and Dr Stephen Dunn, NHS Midlands and East Director of Policy and Strategy.
In the afternoon, Professor Allan Barrell, Entrepreneur in Residence at both the University of Cambridge, England, and McMaster University, Canada shared his views on the international lessons learned and innovation tips for the NHS.
Also at the event were innovators such as Paul Brooks, Head of Facilities Management at Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust who invented the ‘Derby Door’, an inflatable door which enables open bay areas to be closed off for disinfection. This has just won two awards at the national "Building Better Healthcare Awards" - the "Best Interior Product Award" and the "Patient's Choice Award.
On the day, Andrew MacPhearson and team members from the NHS Midlands and East Strategic Projects team showcased their work on their stand which received the award of Highly Commended in the Procurement Initiative category in the 2011 HSJ Awards.
Kaye said: “We are delighted the first Midlands and East Innovation Expo has brought together so many NHS staff and partners with ideas and proven ways of improving outcomes for patients. Here today we have seen over 140 presentations and posters, providing clear evidence of leading edge practice from local staff. They had great ideas and the energy and resilience to make these happen. We now need to ensure that every one of our 288,000 staff in the region are equally as inspired and empowered to bring their ideas to life and improve the lives or our patients.’
