Title:                Webster Stratton collaborative parent training

Basically no one in health were running Parenting Groups in Nottinghamshire-in CAMHS we felt we needed to broaden the range of interventions on offer to Parents.  The Children’s Day Unit Team felt we had lots of practical experience in addressing difficult and challenging behaviour and that we wanted to pass this experience onto the Parents themselves.  We also wanted to support parents in developing specific skills to promote Play and to show them what we did on the Children’s Day Unit.

We began a search to find which programme had the best evidence-with the Webster Stratton Programme coming out by far the best.  We piloted the programme and have now integrated it into a substantive part of the Children’s Day Unit provision at Thorneywood.  This was done with a zero cost implication to the service as we changed what we do.  We are currently starting our sixth course and intend to offer more specialist Parent Training to specific Care Groups in the near future e.g. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

We are not the only people running these groups -however we also offer a Parallel Sibling Group and conduct Social Skills Training alongside the programme which we feel supports the programme and the Parents.

Does it work-well according to the Parents who complete the course it certainly helps and it certainly makes a difference.  What’s more we have also put into practice certain aspects of the course onto the Children’s Day Unit so we also practice what we preach.  This is not a course for "Bad Parents" this is a course for Parents who want to try to do things differently.  A bit like the current NHS!
