Rutland
Out of the Rut is a social enterprise scheme, which was established in partnership with Rutland County Council in 2006.
There was and still is, a need to support people with learning difficulties and mental health issues in Rutland not only to find employment but also to help them gain the skills and confidence they need to start work. The people we support have either never been employed or have been unemployed for many years and face barriers to paid employment. Out of the Rut aims to address these issues in Rutland and provides a creative range of openings for people to work.
Over the years, Out of the Rut has created employment opportunities for people by training and encouraging individuals to find their own jobs. We develop specific employment projects run on a commercial basis, which are then run by disabled people with support from the social enterprise and Rutland County Council staff.
A recent project has transformed a disused toilet block into home grown glory by converting it into a fruit and vegetable shop using locally sourced produce where possible.
Working across the sparsely populated rural county, Out of the Rut also has a business unit in the village of Lyndon. Its business interests include:
- leaflet distribution to 15,500 homes across the county
- growing specialist grass and wild flower seed mixes which are currently available in bulk
- bicycle maintenance
- conservation work
- producing a range of owl and bird boxes
- undertaking contract work in the county e.g. grass cutting for parish councils.
Out of the Rut embraces people’s abilities rather than disabilities helping them to become more independent.
