Last Orders is an Alcohol Identification and Brief Advice (IBA) service which targets lower and increasing risk drinkers.
We offer practical and confidential advice to people living in Nottingham City, who want to reduce the amount of alcohol they drink. We work with GP practices, the wider community and other alcohol services in Nottingham to ensure people receive the appropriate support.
Nottingham has one of the highest rates of alcohol related hospital admissions and in 2008, was allocated extra recourse through the Department of Health to develop an early intervention programme.
We train primary care staff to recognise when people may be drinking to excess and provide brief intervention clinics in GP practices, health centres and other community locations. We have a large health promotion role and attend many community events to spread our message.
We work in partnership with other services such as Health Gay Nottingham, Chill Out Sound Support, the Traveller Health Team and the Homeless Health Team and offer outreach services. Extensive consultation with service users, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and Framework Housing Association staff has ensured the service meets users’ needs and our central access point for referrals has helped streamline routes into our service.
Our presence in GP surgeries has resulted in raised awareness of the service, quick referrals and a service that is responsive to need. We hold no waiting list – each referral is contacted within three days and has an appointment within five days.
Last Orders now forms an integral part of the Nottingham City Alcohol Pathway. It has made a significant contribution to developing the community detoxification protocol and is very well received by all services working in the substance misuse field. More than 1,700 staff of various disciplines have been trained in Identification and Brief Advice and the physical effects of alcohol.
