This project supports young people aged 14-35, all of
whom have early onset Psychosis (mental illness), to return
to education and employment and access better
healthcare. By helping to shape services which focus on
their needs, the members have maintained their forum for
over two years and many have returned to work and
college as a result. The Young Persons’ Forum consists of
young service users, staff and wider community
stakeholders who have developed twice-weekly group
work sessions to focus on returning to education, returning
to employment and improved confidence and access to
health services.
Service users sign up to the forum and begin a “two step”
approach to getting back into mainstream education and
employment. Step one addresses assertiveness, confidence
building and health advice, and the step two “Job club”
helps to support young people back into the workplace
and college classes.
The team worked in partnership with young service users,
private and independent sector, schools and colleges, social
care and health, borough council and advocacy services
across Northamptonshire. Over the period 2006-2007,
74% of service users returned to education, 61% secured
employment and 87% were “very satisfied” with the
Young Persons’ Forum, and 12 participants accessed the
Princess Trust going forward to a further 12-week activity
programme. The service users and nominees are
particularly proud of the numbers of people returning to
work and education. Some service users return to group
sessions to “give their testimony” and offer true inspiration
and hope to other young people who have become ill for
the first time.
