The Acute Team, Nutrition and Dietetic Department, Nottinghamshire County PCT

Within the PCT, a high proportion of patients receiving in

patient care, also receive enteral tube feeding. In the

community there are approximately 70 – 80 patients at any

one time in various settings including their own homes and

nursing homes. The aim of this project was to design and

make available on the health community platform, an

electronic learning package to promote best practice within

the area of enteral feeding. The package has a number of

modules to cover all facets on the journey of enteral

feeding, with a multiple choice test at the end. There is

also a section at the end which highlights the key points.

The programme supports the Continuous Professional

Development for all health care professionals within this

specific area.

The project, initiated with the Nutrition and Dietetic

department led a consultation with colleagues within the

acute and community trust, sought guidance from

colleagues within Infection Control and members of the

Enteral Sub Group of the Trust Nutrition Board, and worked

in partnership with the Bassetlaw Nutrition and Dietetic

Department. The Education and Training Department at

Kings Mill Hospital liaised with E Venture Internet Platform

and Nottinghamshire Healthcare Learning Management

System to upload the programme to enable users to access.

In a fast paced environment, where time is limited,

opportunities for training are restricted. E-learning,

however, provides a convenient and flexible approach to

accessing training and various updates for staff. Once

registered, the user is able to log onto a dedicated

homepage where they receive the latest e-learning news

and information about courses. Courses can be accessed

via any computer with an internet connection, allowing

users to log on either at work or in the comfort of their

own home.

Comments from staff who evaluated the programme

include: “I think this is an excellent learning tool and as a

point of reference”, “Clear, easy to read and access”,

“Good. Can go at your own pace and dip in and out as

needed”, “Good graphics, easy to use, well laid out” and

“Very well put together”.
